Traditional Home Magazine

“Fashionable, Sophisticated Las Vegas Home” designed by Karen E. Putman while an Associate with Scheurer Architects was featured in the September 2014 issue of Traditional Home.

THSeptCoverThink about fashion in Las Vegas and your head fills with images of showgirls in sequins and feathered headdresses, gamblers in boastful prints, and club-hoppers in lamé cocktail dresses. Excess—and lots of it. But fashion enthusiast Lori Scalleat drew on a different style vision for her suburban dream home: the custom-tailored look. Luxurious but restrained, sophisticated, and comfortable. “Tempered Vegas,” in the words of Tim Clarke, the Santa Monica-based designer who crafted the interiors to suit Lori and her husband, real estate developer Jeff LaPour.

“In Las Vegas, appearance oftentimes trumps comfort, and we didn’t want that,” Lori says. “We are not glitzy people, and wanted a home that was casual, but with richness and authenticity. And it needed to be classic and age well, not trendy.”

Seeing Red: Remodelista

A home designed by P2 Design on Skyewiay Road in Brentwood was featured on the blog REMODELISTA 12/05/13: “The 8 Best Exterior Door Paints”

The 8 Best Red Exterior House Paints by Meredith Swinehart

Issue 101 • The Early Bird
Red is a great house color, but only the right red will do. We searched high and low for the best exterior red paint colors, only to learn that the range of “right” reds is surprisingly wide. From traditional farmhouse reds imbued with orange to pink-inflected shades for bold front doors, a good red is sophisticated and versatile.

Tadao Ando

TadaoEvery once on awhile you get to meet a cultural icon in your profession. I have been fortunate to have met many, yet one in particular holds a fond place in my heart. As architectural students in the 1980’s, we admired Tadao Ando, Aldo Rossi, Richard Meier, Michael Graves, Alvar Alto, Philippe Starke, Frank Gehry, Norman Foster, Richard Rogers, Hans Hollien…….and the list goes on……my apologies to those I missed.

When Tadao Ando came to Los Angeles back in 2011 to publicize his book of Complete Works 1975-2012, my friend Billy Lehman invited me to join him and his wife, writer Dana Goodyear-Lehman, to meet Mr. Ando at the Taschen book store in Beverly Hills. One would think I was a giddy child on their first trip to Disneyland. I was thrilled! I stood nearby unable to maintain my cool composure as Tadao not only personally addressed and signed my book, but included a sketch. As one can see in the photo, I was grinning ear-to-ear as I thanked him profusely.

Almost as fulfilling as that experience was the meal we ate afterwards at the original Chego, where Roy Choi is known for his mix-culture rice bowls and a “fount of culinary postmodernism”. The Chubby Pork Belly rice bowl with crunchy, juicy chunks of caramelized pork belly rubbed with the Korean spice paste gochujang was absolutely delicious. The fusion of flavors and spices of all the dishes we sampled were phenomenal. I highly recommend it!
